Will Pope Leo XIV renounce his American citizenship?

I was recently interviewed by La Presse, an independent and entirely digital news outlet in Canada, about the possibility of Pope Leo XIV renouncing his US citizenship.

Edward David, an ethical theologian at King’s College London, believes the negative political repercussions of Leo XIV renouncing his American citizenship would far outweigh any tax or legal benefits.

“It would really be interpreted as a repudiation of the United States, certainly of the Trump administration,” David said. “This decision would make Leo a very political pope and would diminish his potential influence over Republicans in the United States. I don’t think he will make that decision.”
